What To Call Women
The words we use matter. I’ve spent three decades promoting women’s martial arts and here’s what I’ve noticed.
1. Women can call other women girls. Men should not do this. It can suggest that to be female is to be immature.
2. Women can call other women ladies. Men should not do this. Many women have been told that grappling is not lady-like. Being a lady may therefore be considered a stereotype in this context.
3. The word bitch, in any context, is the one most likely to bring all your happiness to an end.
4. The best words to use are: People, friends, and grapplers. It is rarely necessary to be gender specific.
5. If referring to gender is absolutely necessary, use the word woman.
6. This all may take deliberate and long term practice since our culture defaults to using gendered terms.
7. Do not expect to be rewarded or recognized for your efforts.
