Though she never looked at herself as an individual standing up for women’s rights, Rusty was a true trailblazer. It is thanks to Rusty that women’s judo is a competitive sport and an Olympic event. Don’t Call Me Sir! is a movie about Rusty’s early life, her beginning in judo, and how she, then a single mother, had to disguise herself as a man to compete in the 1959 New York State Judo Championships – which she won! And how her medal was taken away from her when she admitted to being a girl. Rusty is in the movie portrayed by by Kayla Harrison, the 2012 Olympic Gold Medal Winner in judo, the first American, male or female, to be Olympic Judo Champion!
