Am vergangenen Wochenende startete die zweifache Mutter Ana Yagües wieder bei der BJJ European Championship in Lissabon, Portugal. Im vergangenen Jahr sprangen gleich zwei Titel bei den Euros raus. Diesmal, das erste Mal bei den Braungurten, langte es trotzdem noch für den zweiten Platz. Gerade vor knapp drei Monaten wurde ihr zweites Kind geboren: Jetzt ist sie schon zurück auf der Matte.

There are few better examples of ancient grappling tradition than those found in the Far Reaches of the North, where the savage Vikings would battle for dominance, social standing, and most importantly honor. There are even ancient texts which depict a grappling tournament between Gods, namely that between Thor and Elli. Yes, in the harsh northern lands, a breed of warrior exists that thrives upon the thrill of battle, and that fire warms them, even in the frigid winter cold. On the 15th of February, in Vantaa, Finland the warriors with this brutal ethos and Viking drive will have a chance to compete against one another, and the frigid cold in an Open-Air No-Gi Submission Wrestling competition.

We Love MMA gab die Begegnung zwischen No-Compromises-Turnierfinalistin Anne Merkt und der Brasilianerin Luana Souza von offizieller Seite bekannt.
Die Südamerikanerin ist Jiu-Jitsu-Championesse in ihrer Heimat und trägt den blauen Gurt in der „sanften Kunst“. Das ASM-Teammitglied wird ihr internationales MMA-Profi-Debüt am 1. Februar geben, wo sie von Merkt aus dem Combat Team Hamburg erwartet wird.
Merkt stand zuletzt im Mai des letzten Jahres im Ring. Dort nahm sie am 4-Frauen-Titelturnier im Federgewicht teil, wo sie das Finale erreichen konnte. Mit einem Sieg gegen Jessy Schwarz löste die Hamburgerin ihr Finalticket, musste sich dort jedoch MMA-Veteranin Alexandra Buch geschlagen geben (GnP berichtete). Nachdem Merkt daraufhin ihre Doktorarbeit erfolgreich hinter sich gebracht hat, startet sie nun ins neue Jahr, um sich der Herausforderung der Brasilianerin zu stellen.

Recently on a visit back home, I met my one of my close friends at his son’s martial arts studio so I could drop in and see what young Ethan was up to. Ethan was one step away from getting his white sash in Poekoelan, an Indonesian martial art. He beamed with pride as we watched him do various forms and drills. Shortly after I left town, Ethan earned his white sash, upon which he got to join the big kids in the adjacent room. There the big kids practice more advanced forms, techniques, and even some sparring. He was thrilled.
Ethan’s always been a good kid, but from what I observed the martial arts gave him quite a healthy dose of self esteem and self respect - two of the many benefits one gains with participation in them. Whether your kid is too bossy, too shy, or perhaps just a little hyper, the martial arts can help your child learn many important life lessons. (And, of course, those same lessons apply for all of us, not just kids.)

Michelle Nicolini Returns To MMA in February

The 2013 ADCC World Grappling champion Michelle Nicolini will go back to MMA next month.
She is expected to face English MMA fighter Lanchana Green at Made4theCage event in Houghton, England February 22. .
Nicolini (1-0 MMA) is a multiple time world BJJ champion, and is a black belt under her ex-husband Robert Drysdale. She won back to back BJJ world titles and won her weight class at ADCC last October. Her MMA debut was 2 years ago. The fight went down at Peru’s Inka Fight event, and the CheckMat rep put her slick ground game to work in swiftly tapping out local fighter Cristina Mejia.
Lanchana Green who is a 9-7 Muay Thai fighter will be making her MMA debut.
The fight is at 115 pounds.

In the “Fighter of the Year” category, Ronda Rousey took home the award with 29.28% of the vote. Holly Holm came in second with 19.32% and Julianna Pena third with about 9.48%. Rousey would also take “Inspirational Fighter” with 21.19% of the vote.
Rousey versus Tate II tookn home the “Fight of the Year” 35.32% of the vote. Tate’s fight with Cat Zingano took second at 15.26%, and third went to Jessamyn Duke versus Raquel Pennington on “The Ultimate Fighter” with 10.50%.
Tate would get “Personality of the Year”, edging out Rousey 25.35% to 23.27% .
The divisional awards mimicked the WMMA Press Awards:
